I’ve decided to put down the Saul Bellow collection for a bit. Stupidly, I’ve picked up two: Keep the Aspidistra Flying by George Orwell, and John Allen’s book on Lubetkin. On the Design Museum website, I came across this quote from Lubetkin’s speech to a RIBA awards ceremony:
“A society that openly professes that the present is expendable and the future unintelligible begets artists who have to scream to be noticed and remembered for a quarter of an hour”

So how does that fit with current US policy which seems to suggest that the future is expendable as well?
Thanks for the Squeezebox tip - will look into it as soon as I get somewhere decent to live! Am still stuck in hospital residences for the immediate future….
