I’m wired on the combination of making rapid progress on writing up my DPhil and quadruple expresso, so when Velorution mentioned Dave Warnock wanted suggestions for changing the behaviour of drivers who dangerously overtake cyclists, I had some suggestions. The first one that sprang to mind was increasing the anticpated regret of the drivers by making the possible consequence of their actions very salient. Dave isn’t up for the method that I use*, so I forwarded him a bunch of TpB-derived persuasive messages:
1. Road accidents kill 3 cyclists and injure 330 every week. The way you
drive can reduce this.2. Road accidents kill 3 cyclists and injure 330 every week. Wouldn’t
you regret it if you killed a cyclist?3. Road accidents kill 3 cyclists and injure 330 every week. Whenever
you see a cyclist, remember to slow down!4. Road accidents kill 3 cyclists and injure 330 every week. Make a
decision to slow down when passing cyclists right now!5. Slow down when passing cyclists. Your neighbourhood will be a nicer
place, and your neighbours will think better of you.
Hopefully he might DiY some posters to augment road signs. I would love to do a study on this stuff, but it would be really expensive to evaluate properly.
*I explain that if they want to knock me down, they better mean it because one of us is going to end up in hospital.
